Laughter, Happiness and Genuine Joy

I began working with children at a time in my life when I felt like crap, had no self-worth, and really didn’t think I had much to offer. But, it was those loving eyes, and unconditional acceptance that gave me my soul back, and I was supposed to be the teacher!! They laughed ‘with me’ not at me, when I said or did something a bit ‘monkeys undies’ (silly) , they gave unconditional positive regard and showed a genuine joy in my company, listened and heard what I was saying , valued my personal space but most of all valued me as a person. How much I appreciate those lessons all learned from 3 & 4 year olds, my many years at university have never ever usurped those teachings of my ‘young professors of life’. What I want to share is that as parents it is so important to embrace the laughter, happiness, times and genuine joy in ‘being with’ our children. We only get them for lends as they go on to lead their own lives, so value that time, take it from me it all goes so quickly But, memories are gold, and always ours to keep.

On Children Kahlil Gibran

Your children are not your children. They are the sons and daughters of Life's longing for itself. They come through you but not from you, And though they are with you yet they belong not to you.

You may give them your love but not your thoughts, For they have their own thoughts. You may house their bodies but not their souls, For their souls dwell in the house of tomorrow, which you cannot visit, not even in your dreams. You may strive to be like them, but seek not to make them like you. For life goes not backward nor tarries with yesterday.

You are the bows from which your children as living arrows are sent forth. The archer sees the mark upon the path of the infinite, and He bends you with His might that His arrows may go swift and far. Let your bending in the archer's hand be for gladness; For even as He loves the arrow that flies, so He loves also the bow that is stable.
